If you’re a blogger, you’ve been there: That awkward moment right after you tell someone you’re a blogger. Maybe it’s how new the medium is (but really, is it that new?), or maybe it’s a question of what being a blogger even means, but some people just don’t get it. In all honesty, a few of these “huh?” reactions have stopped me from bringing it up until I get a feel for the person. But why should I be even slightly embarrassed to talk about my passion project?

But, you know, maybe that’s it. Maybe seeing someone pursue something for themselves just makes people uncomfortable. I mean, it is slightly pretentious to assume that people want to look at pictures of you and read what you have to say. I think that’s what gets to me. It’s been a struggle to come to terms with the fact that this is for me, and if other people care and want to see pictures of me and read what I have to say, it’s an added bonus.

With that, here’s a couple tips I have for when you get that “ohhh” or “what does that even mean” reaction from people:

Be confident. If someone sees how excited you are to share and talk about your blog, it will be that much more difficult for them to shut you down.

Have an explanation ready. Be ready to talk about what you do beyond simply saying you’re a blogger. Talk about writing, talk about content creation, talk about influencer and social marketing. Talk about the business and the work and the determination that goes into it. No one can deny your work ethic and passion after that. I mean, that’s definitely happened to me, but it makes it harder to deny for sure.

Prepare yourself for people to still not get it. You know, sometimes people are just close-minded. While blogging is NOT new (but, like I mentioned above, some people think it is), the idea of creating a business and a brand based on your life is relatively unusual to a lot of people still. And that’s ok. You don’t have to prove your worth to them – just show them with your success.

So, yeah, sometimes it’s a difficult conversation to have with people. The ones that do get it will make you seriously happy, but the ones that are put off by your answer to “what do you do?” can’t come back with anything if you speak to the tips above. Either way, just keep doing what you’re doing. Really though: it’s for you, not for them. Well, and your readers – but that’s why they’re the best.
