Del Mar Racetrack

For the holiday weekend, my boyfriend Michael and I thought forever about something to do and somewhere to go.  After finding that so many hotels were either booked up or ridiculously priced, we landed on the idea of a day trip to Del Mar Thoroughbred Club yesterday.  I had never been, but Michael used to go pretty regularly and told me it would be fun to do for the day.  We booked train tickets which ended up being way more convenient than sitting through the weekend traffic.  We got on at a station three minutes from our house, rode for an hour and a half, and took a shuttle from the Solana Beach station right to the track.  I was caught up in the energy right away.  The surroundings were beautiful and the weather was so perfect.  I couldn’t wait to see the horses!

Since I grew up riding, I’ve always been infatuated with these animals’ strength and beauty.  While I’m not a huge fan of how dangerous racing horses can be, if precautions are taken it truly is amazing to see these horses perform at their top potential.  We stayed for all 11 races, and obviously made bets on each one.  While we didn’t end up on top, it was fun and the wagers added an extra intensity to each run.  After every race was over, we took the shuttle back to the station and killed time before our late night train at Wild Note Café.  It was a delicious restaurant that had a concert venue in the back.  It was gourmet quality with a laid back vibe, a winning combination.  All in all, we had such an amazing, high-energy day.  I can’t wait to go back!
