If there’s one thing certain in the interior design world, it’s that Charles and Ray Eames designed exceptional furniture for Herman Miller. Their pieces were always modern with a vintage appeal; they’re simply timeless. I’ve focused on the Eames Lounge Chair in the past, and now I’m going to highlight another one of their iconic designs – Eames DSW Chairs.
Originally designed fully in metal, the DSW (which stands for dining height, side chair with wood base) was introduced in MoMA’s 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design. The material was changed to fiberglass in 1950 and are made today from recyclable polypropylene, a material which has the matte characteristic that Charles was aiming for before his death.
Like most Eames designs, the DSW is available in multiple color and wood options. Because of this, there are endless styling possibilities for these chairs. They are rare in the fact that I’m actually ok with mixing different colors of the design or pairing with other styles around the dining table. They’re minimal enough to just work yet have enough of a design element to make a statement. If you’re looking for forever-chairs, look no further than the DSW. Browse the slideshow above for some inspiration on how to incorporate this versatile design into your home!
