Exposed Brick

When it comes to interior design, it’s all about those extra elements that turn a house into a home. Even if your style is minimal like mine, there are always little details that can be added that take a space from cold to cozy. One of my favorite ways that this can be achieved is through exposed brick. Because brick’s natural element is normally an older structure, even a small accent wall or column with the material gives an illusion of lived-in warmth. It’s a look that is equal parts industrial and rustic, so there’s an endless number of ways that it can be styled. And while there’s one traditional brick size, the color is something that can be played with – keep it in it’s natural red shade, white wash the surface for a rural vibe, or paint it white for a clean look that still holds texture.

If you’re lucky enough to live in a home with a brick structure, incorporating this look into your space is simple. It’s just a question of hiring a professional (or DIY-ing it if you’re brave) to get through drywall and uncover it in your strategically planned spot. If you’re like me, who lives somewhere like California, where most homes were built in the mid to late century, brick isn’t something that exists to be uncovered. You could always pay to resurface a fireplace to brick, but adding a whole accent wall would also be a question of adding extra structural support. In this situation, there are a few inexpensive options: a veneer, or the cheaper, but not as aesthetically pleasing alternative, wallpaper. A veneer is perfect for homes that can’t support the weight of adding a brick wall because they’re a tenth of the thickness of full-sized bricks yet look like the real deal. I found a video by DIY Network on YouTube explaining this option and it’s application in depth. The second option is a brick-look wallpaper. As I mentioned, wallpaper obviously lacks the full appeal of real brick. But if you’re in an apartment setting or it’s just a small area, it’s a great way to add character to your space.

Incorporating a material like brick into a design is a sure way to make a room warm and comfortable. Now that you know there are options to make it happen, browse the inspiration I gathered below!
