The Pressure to Create Content

Let me start this by telling you that these pictures were shot in the Fall of last year – maybe six months ago. I was going through Photos on my desktop and came across these. I had forgotten all about them. Maybe they popped into my head a couple times over the last few months, but newer content and contracted work always came before posting them. So, days and months passed where these pictures sat wasted, unused until now. And that got me thinking. As a part of the growing social industry of content creation, I constantly feel a pressure to create – even if I don’t know if or when that content will be used. Will that pressure ever become too much? Is there a line that gets crossed when making content becomes excessive?

This train of thought led me into thinking about blogging as the business it has become. Maybe it’s the lifestyle, maybe it’s the facade being put on by so many bloggers, but some people I’ve talked to still don’t look at this as valid work. And I can totally understand that, since it looks like a lot more play than work from the outside perspective. But, as I’ve said in posts in the past, that couldn’t be further from the case. I’ve dedicated SO much time and effort into creating for my site and social channels. Don’t get me wrong – I love it to the point of obsession. I could never complain about building my small business, but I guess I just wanted to touch a bit on crossing that line I mentioned.

More and more, we’re bombarded with content. Media is everywhere. So, the only way to stand out in that tidal wave is to contribute to it. That pressure to make your mark in the digital world can take over – and that’s the crossing of the line into excessive territory. Finding these unused pictures (used now, at least) also made me think of the time that was wasted up until now taking them. So, here’s my new plan to beat that constant pressure to create: I will now be selective with what I’m creating. I won’t force anything. If I happen upon the perfect backdrop or have lined up a campaign, that is the time to either express myself or push myself to brainstorm shoots. Blogging has become second nature within my lifestyle, so that is the lifestyle I will show. No more shooting for the sake of shooting, no more feeling like I need to produce shots without meaning. I’m coming into myself like never before, so I hope all you readers are okay with me showing only that. Here’s to creating real, honest, and true content.
