I realized something the other day. I share a lot about the products I use, but haven’t talked too much about wellness and the things I do for my mental health. And honestly? Those things are so much more important to me than makeup. I’m a firm believer that beauty starts from the inside out – a fact that seems to be taking over the industry as of late. I’m not mad at this at all. Taking care of yourself will, in turn, show up on the outside. It’s a simple concept to understand, yet so many of us in this insanely busy day and age can’t keep up. While I’m about to outline my usual nighttime routine, I would be lying if I said I do all of these things EVERY single night. So, disclaimer: do what you can, when you can, and never stress about missing a step or two or three. That would just be counter-productive, wouldn’t it?
Light candles, burn palo santo or sage, and put on your favorite perfume. I can’t stress how important scents are for setting a relaxing vibe. I always dim the lights, spark one of my Diptyque candles, and set fire to a palo santo stick. The mix is ultra calming for me, but pick one or the other if that seems overwhelming. If you don’t like burning incense, you can also find smoke-less smudge spray, which I’ve heard great things about. Last, but not least, I’ll also roll on my Malin + Goetz Cannabis Perfume Oil for an extra bit of self-love.
Dry brush and moisturize. This one is important for a number of reasons. First, dry brushing is a great way to get your lymphatic system engaged. This will help your body to release and get rid of toxins while improving your immune strength. Second, it works as a great exfoliant by removing dead skin and invigorating new cell production. Followed by a moisturizing routine, this step helps me to focus in on some much-needed me time while getting into a relaxed state.
Use essential oil everything. This one goes a liiittle along with the first one, but isn’t all about aromatherapy. In regards to that, I do always use my lavender essential oil room spray I make at home. I’ll spray it all in the air and on my bedding for an instant refresh. I’ll also use straight essential oils like peppermint on my temples (amazing for headaches) or a bit of lavender under my nose for extra relaxation.
Listen to an audiobook, podcast, or guided meditation. Sometimes, one, sometimes, all three – it just depends on the mood I’m in. I’ve written about some of my favorite podcasts before, but I’m particular about the ones I listen to at night. I usually opt for an audiobook or a podcast that’s more of a story and less of a conversation. The narrative perspective is super relaxing for me. If I do a meditation, I browse through my Inscape app for a category that catches my eye, like Instant Stress Relief or Tranquil Evening. These ones are always so perfect for zoning out or reflecting on the day you’ve had – two important things for winding down.
Smoke weed. So, I realize this one is a little controversial for some. Growing up in California, smoking is pretty much a part of the culture. I’ve smoked since my late teens, and I’m a fully functioning, responsible member of society. I completely hate the negative connotation that surrounds smoking weed that has been hammered into society by fear-mongering. Smoking has SO MANY legitimate medical benefits. I’m no certified expert, so I won’t go into detail there, but please do your own research if you don’t believe me. I, for one, smoke every night as a way to unwind, de-stress, and nip my always-present anxiety.
Hydrate. Yep. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it every day of my life until I die. Just drink a shit tone of water. Your body (and skin) will thank you later.
